A force F pulls two trolleys A and B, connected by a chain, where the mass of B is twice the mass of trolley A.

It is given that the acceleration of trolley B is 4 m.s⁻² to the right.

 

  1. How does the acceleration of trolley A compare to that of trolley B? Explain your reasoning.

  2. For which of the two trolleys in the normal force equal to the weight of the trolley? Explain.

  3. Mr Singh asks his class to calculate the applied force F if it is given that the trolleys are pulled on a frictionless surface and the mass of trolley A is 7,5 kg. Mr Singh’s class uses using  to calculate the applied force. What value should they substitute for the mass, ? Explain. (3)

  5. The chain connecting A and B breaks. Tracey tells her group peers that trolley A will slow down and eventually come to rest since there is no force pulling it. Zuzie disagrees and tells the group that the trolley will continue to move at constant velocity since the surface is frictionless. Whose statement do you agree with, Tracey’s or Zuzie’s? Justify your choice by referring to application laws of motion. (3)
